Why would Apple make the iPhone 8’s camera vertical?
The most important problem is, well, space.
You see, with all the cameras featured in front sensors that look and what not, it is really hard to put a dual camera module there. It is feasible, but here is the following reason for not doing so:

As Tim Cook has been hinting, Apple is moving into the Augmented Reality market, especially with the launch of ARKit in WWDC 2017. Vertical camera is also a better way to enhance those capabilities during landscape mode.
